Overview

Sean Mumaw's practice is focused primarily on the areas of estate planning and administration. However, these areas by their nature touch on a host of other legal areas in which he also practices, such as tax (estate, gift, income, and inheritance), general business law, business succession planning, real estate, and the like.  Sean's planning practice also involves assisting clients in the implementation of their personal goals such as charitable planning and addressing sensitive or unique personal issues that impact themselves and their families.

The areas of estate planning and administration initially fascinated Sean because of their technical intricacies.  As his practice matured, though, he came to appreciate the personal side of the practice and that sometimes it is difficult for clients to consider, let alone plan for, their estates because of the finality they see as being involved.  Similarly, for those who have lost a loved one, the process of administering an estate can be equally difficult due to the impact of their loss.   By talking through the intricacies in a relatable manner and focusing on developing a plan that will benefit the client’s family after they are gone, or in advising a family on the ins and outs of the administration of an estate, Sean feels he can provide peace of mind value that cannot be stated in dollars and cents.  Virtually every situation Sean encounters is unique, as no two families are exactly alike and, as a result, he's never fearful of a dull day at work.

Sean's approach to advising on a planning issue is two-fold.  The first thing he does is listen…and then he keeps listening. In order to help a client achieve their goals, it is imperative that he understands not only the issue they have in mind, but also understands why that issue is important to them and what outcomes they feel are acceptable, and vice versa. Then, he works to help the client understand the structure of a plan from a legal perspective and how the structure will allow them to achieve or implement their goals.  From a plan implementation perspective, Sean regularly works with individual and corporate fiduciaries to ensure that they are implementing the terms of the particular estate or trust within the bounds of the plan and in such a manner so as to ensure that the goals of plan are achieved efficiently and effectively.

Sean's career spans 20 years, in which time he has had the benefit of working with attorneys in firms of various sizes and has also been fortunate to have gained experience with the area’s largest trust company for a time. Each step in his career has been beneficial as he has been able to forge terrific relationships both within the legal community and with other professional advisors so they can work collaboratively in achieving a client’s goals.
